Dominican Republic

Yearbook 2010

Dominican Republic. According to COUNTRYAAH, the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) won a convincing victory in the congressional and municipal elections held on May 16. In the Senate, the party won all seats except one, which went to the main competitor, Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD). The third historic party in the Dominican Republic, Partido Reformista Social Cristiano (PRSC), was virtually wiped out; after the 2006 Senate elections, the party had no less than 29 seats but lost all of them and won only in four municipalities against 26 four years ago. In the election to the House of Representatives, PLD won 100 out of 183 seats, and PRD fared significantly better than in the Senate election by winning 75 seats.

2010 Dominican Republic

In general, elections were considered to be an indicator that a two-party system of PLD and PRD is emerging in the country, and where PRSC has long been out of the picture since its charismatic founder Joaquín Balaguer, the country's president several times, passed away eight years ago. The PRD's success was attributed to President Leonel Fernández's successful economic and social policies, while the opposition claimed the victory was due to illegal campaign funding.
